10 Tips for Making Your Wig Last Longer
Why wig care matters
A quality wig can last 6–12 months or more with proper care. But without it, even the best human hair piece can tangle, dry out, and lose its shape within weeks.
1. Store it on a wig stand
Never toss your wig in a drawer. A wig stand (or even a tall bottle) keeps the shape and prevents tangling.
2. Wash sparingly
Every 7–10 wears is enough. Over-washing strips the hair of moisture. Use a gentle sulfate-free shampoo.
3. Detangle before washing
Use a wide-tooth comb starting from the ends, working up. Never brush a dry wig aggressively.
4. Air dry whenever possible
Heat is the enemy. Lay it flat on a towel or place it on a stand to dry naturally.
5. Use a silk or satin pillowcase
If you sleep in your wig, a silk pillowcase reduces friction and frizz dramatically.
6. Deep condition weekly
A leave-in conditioner or a 15-minute deep conditioning mask keeps human hair soft and manageable.
7. Minimize heat styling
If you must use heat, always apply a heat protectant and keep the temperature under 180°C.
8. Keep it moisturized
A light spritz of wig-safe oil or serum every few days prevents dryness, especially in Accra's heat.
9. Protect the lace
Handle the lace gently when applying and removing. Use adhesive remover — never pull.
10. Rotate your wigs
If you have more than one, rotating gives each piece time to rest and recover between wears.
